Summary
  • "Berlino, estate 1936. --
  • "Berlin, summer 1936. The Olympics are upon us. Goebbels was right about the initial resistance of Hitler and his Hitler youth and everything is ready to leave the rest of the world open-mouthed in front of the power and majesty of the Reich. At the top of the complex and ambitious organization of the event there is a man, or rather a soldier: Wolfgang Fr?stner. A few weeks after the inaugural ceremony, however, a newspaper denounces his Jewish origins and the immediate consequence is the dismissal from office. From deus ex machina with full powers, F?rstner finds himself in a corner: he is respected by veterans who fought with him in the First World War but must now suffer the humiliation of young Nazis and only the intervention of a former comrade allows him to remain in the Olympic Village, albeit with a secondary role. Journalists from all over the world come to Berlin and the cameras strongly desired by F?hrer and Leni Riefenstahl bring the Olympics for the first time on the small screen. And while Jesse Owens enters history with his four gold medals, the Korean marathon runner Son Kitei is forced to win for Japan and takes on Austria-Peru, which Eduardo Galeano will call "the most exciting football match of all time. ", F?rstner wanders like a ghost in a city dressed up for a party. He no longer recognizes the country he loves, nor the woman he married, and perhaps not even himself. In his first novel, written with Paolo Frusca, Federico Buffa puts his unmistakable narrative style at the service of a true story and tells us not only many extraordinary pages of sport, but also the parable of a man, of a capital and of a country on the edge of the abyss." --
